چکیده

In recent years, constraint propagation techniques have been shown to be highly eeective for solving diicult scheduling problems. In this paper, we present an algorithm which combines constraint propagation with a problem decomposition approach in order to simplify the solution of the job shop scheduling problem. This is mainly guided by the observation that constraint propagation is more eeective 1 for`small' problem instances. Roughly speaking, the algorithm consists of deducing operation sequences that are likely to occur in an optimal solution of the job shop scheduling problem (JSP). The algorithm for which the name edge-guessing procedure has been chosen { since with respect to the job shop scheduling problem (JSP) the deduction of machine sequences is mainly equivalent to orienting edges in a disjunctive graph { can be applied in a preprocessing step, reducing the solution space, thus speeding up the overall solution process. In spite of the heuristic nature of edge-guessing, it still leads to near-optimal solutions. If combined with a heuristic algorithm, we will demonstrate that given the same amount of computation time, the additional application of edge-guessing leads to better solutions. This has been tested on a set of well-known JSP benchmark problem instances.

Solving Set Partitioning Problems with Constraint Programming

This paper investigates the potential of constraint programming for solving set partitioning problems occurring in crew scheduling, where constraint programming is restricted to not employ external solvers, as for instance integer linear programming solvers. We evaluate preprocessing steps known from the OR literature on moderately sized set partitioning problems. Further, we propose a new prep...

Clingcon: The next generation

We present the third generation of the constraint answer set system clingcon, combining Answer Set Programming (ASP) with finite domain constraint processing (CP). While its predecessors rely on a black-box approach to hybrid solving by integrating the CP solver gecode, the new clingcon system pursues a lazy approach using dedicated constraint propagators to extend propagation in the underlying...

On the Kernelization of Global Constraints

Kernelization is a powerful concept from parameterized complexity theory that captures (a certain idea of) efficient polynomial-time preprocessing for hard decision problems. However, exploiting this technique in the context of constraint programming is challenging. Building on recent results for the VERTEXCOVER constraint, we introduce novel “loss-less” kernelization variants that are tailored...

Learning How to Propagate Using Random Probing

In constraint programming there are often many choices regarding the propagation method to be used on the constraints of a problem. However, simple constraint solvers usually only apply a standard method, typically (generalized) arc consistency, on all constraints throughout search. Advanced solvers additionally allow for the modeler to choose among an array of propagators for certain (global) ...

Local Consistency in Junction Graphs for Constraint-Based Inference

The concept of local consistency plays a central role in constraint satisfaction. Given a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), local consistency can be characterized as deriving new, possibly tighter, constraints based on local information. The derived constraints simplify the representation of the original CSP without the loss of solutions. This can be seen as a preprocessing procedure. Base...
